Shrinking and twisting of logs is minimized; logs are pre-shrunk before milling and graded by trained inspectors. Doors and windows don't bind, and frequent caulking is not required.

Checking (cracking) is minimized by careful drying; it occurs before construction and defective logs are graded out.

The heat of kiln drying kills insects and their eggs that may be in the wood.

Pitch is crystallized and therefore cannot later seep to the surface.

Preservatives and finishes can be immediately applied to kiln-dried logs; finishes will absorb deeper and last longer.  Typical NON-kiln-dried logs cannot have finishes applied for several months.

Weight of the logs is greatly reduced.  More than 10,000 pounds of water is removed from the typical log home package by the kiln drying process. Two people can easily handle the longest logs.
